Tefilat HaDerech, The Traveler's Prayer or a Wayfarer's prayer is a well-known Jewish prayer. This traditional prayer is recited at the onset of a trip, whether by air, sea or land. Tefilat HaDerech is often recited while standing.  According to general assumption, traveling is entails a certain degree of danger and uncertainty. When a Jewish person is reciting Tefilat HaDerech, they are asking for divine protection is recited at the onset of every journey. Many Jewish people who travel around the world keep a copy of the prayer within reach. Tefilat HaDerech is considered a common protective amulet, and so it is often inscribed onto Jewelry accessories and Hamsas.

Tefilat HaDerech is comprised by a few sentences.  In this short prayer the traveler asks for divine protection and safeguard. The believer asks God to keep them safe from harm during his journey:" May it be Your will, LORD, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace".

It is interesting to note that Tefilat HaDerech is written in plural: although it is recited by one person, in the prayer, we ask God to keep "us" safe.
How can this be explained? According to sacred sources, a trip entails dangers because the traveler is far away from his or her community. The Jewish traveler is often alone or among of strangers, and so - exposed to dangers. Tefilat HaDerech is written in plural as a metaphoric way to include oneself with a large number of people.

May it be Your will, LORD, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace. May You rescue us from the hand of every foe, ambush along the way, and from all manner of punishments that assemble to come to earth. May You send blessing in our handiwork, and grant us grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. May You hear the sound of our humble request because You are God Who hears prayer requests. Blessed are You, Adonai, Who hears prayer.
