What is Havdalah?
Havdalah is a special ritual that symbolically marks the end of Shabbat or a Jewish holiday. Havdalah literally means in Hebrew to make distinction – it is a mitzvah to make a distinction between regular days from holy days. Contemporary Judaiac artists have designed Havdalah sets from a wide range of materials, such as silver or glass, in various sizes and styles. Havdalah service
For Jews, Sunday is the first day of the week. When Shabbat is over Jewish people greet each other with - Have a good week! Or shavua tov in Hebrew! At nightfall on Saturday , the Havdalah service is performed. Blessing is recited while a Kosher Wine or grape juice is poured into a glass or a small dish, usually by the head of the family. The wine is poured until it overflows. A special candle is extinguished in the remains of the wine as a symbol that this candle cannot be used for any other purpose. The wine is considered a virtue for blessing, a segula, since it is used for a mitzvah.
Some believers dip the little finger into the leftover wine and touch their eyes, necks or pockets with it.
Sweet spices or anything with a sweet aroma are also used- these spices are placed to remind us the sweetness of the Shabbat.
